Halalisani is a legal scholar and practitioner with a strong foundation across several areas of law. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Fort Hare (UFH), where he won the prestigious Justice Kate O’Regan Moot Court Competition. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Commercial Law from the University of Cape Town (UCT), specializing in Competition Law and International Trade Law. During his time at UCT, he also obtained a specialised certification in the Twin Peaks financial regulatory system.
Halalisani began his legal career at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Inc. (CDH) as a candidate attorney, gaining experience across various legal disciplines, including Labour Law, Human Rights, Commercial Litigation, Banking and Finance, and Competition Law. During this period, he was recognised as one of Africa’s Brightest Young Minds—an accolade awarded to the continent’s top 100 emerging leaders.
Following his articles, Halalisani returned to UFH as a lecturer in the Department of Commercial Law. He later joined the Constitutional Court of South Africa as a law researcher to Justice Mathopo and Justice Dambuza. There, he was honoured with the “Statute Guru” award, praised for his analytical precision and persuasive statutory interpretation. He also earned the “Debate Guru” award, reflecting his sharp legal reasoning and eloquence during legal seminars.
An emerging voice in legal academia, Halalisani has presented at several conferences and published a peer-reviewed article addressing the legal status of climate change refugees—demonstrating his commitment to tackling pressing global issues through a legal lens. Recently, Halalisani was named in the Mail and Guardian 200 Young South Africans in recognition of his contribution to and excellence thus far in the legal profession.
